I don’t know about you, but the love of God has always – for lack of a better term – suffocated me (I think I know what Paul was talking about in 2 Cor 4:17 about that eternal weight). It is daunting to think about the abounding love that God has so graciously given us, knowing all the while that we are going to fail Him (Rom 5:8).
In 1 John 3:1, the author conveys this thought through the title God gives us when he calls us His children, “See what kind of love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” Knowing the sinful lives we were going to have God still takes His love so far as to call us His children! That is crazy, unmatchless love! God could have stopped at simply redeeming us from our sins, or he could have stopped at sacrificing His son for us, or he could have stopped at giving us eternal life through belief in His son, but He doesn’t stop there. He takes His love even further by adopting us, and calling us His children. If we have a God that is so loving, what keeps us from giving our lives over to Him completely?
