Hey! Over the past few weeks something that has been on my mind a lot is forgiveness. Whether it is our forgiveness from God or our forgiveness from others, it is a huge part of our life on earth and our walk with God. Something that I know can be sometimes hard to grasp is how and even more so WHY would God sacrifice His ONLY son for a bunch of people that He created that don’t even obey Him? This concept still stumps me but coming to terms with this concept is truly what faith is all about. Underneath the forgiveness and sacrifice from God, we have to understand that the underlying depth is His love for us, His creation.
Coming to terms with the understanding that God forgives everyone that He has ever created is one that I find difficult, but like I said earlier, it’s all about faith. So I dove deeper into understanding why this is. Why God would forgive a ton of people that disobey His commands and live sinful lives. Forgiveness isn’t just a one-way street from God though, Matthew 6:14-15 says “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” We can see in this verse that God forgives us just as we forgive others, and through Jesus He says that “Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them” in Luke 17:4.
From what I have found physically through my own actions, forgiveness doesn’t only help the other person feel better in their situation with you, but it also provides you with a sense of closure and warmth in your heart. That feeling is pure joy. It is happiness. It is the Spirit at work within you. Forgiveness may seem selfish, or hard to participate in, but it is a command by God, and it can be extremely beneficial to both sides of a conflict.
